Inspiration.

This is a collection of videos, albums and people who have influenced the direction of my project. The sounds and ideas shown here will feed directly into my work.

Hainbach: Sound of Architecture

Youtube is an incredibly rich resource of ideas for me. I stumbled across this video which uses the architecture of a space as an instrument. This is performance led by electronic musician ‘Hainbach’ who also has a YouTube channel which specialises in experimental music. It was done by planting multiple contact microphones around the room which are then used to amplify the noises made by the objects they’re on, being hit and tapped. Im intrigued by this idea of using a space as in instrument, as well as a live performance.

Beaver & Krause Grace Cathedral Performance (1971)

This is another video I found showing again the use of a sonic space as an instrument. This is a video showing the use of a cathedral in the production of ‘Gandharva’, an album produced by Beaver and Krause who were an American duo who pioneered the start of the electronic music genre. The album used a collection of session musicians playing more traditional instruments such as harp and saxophone, but also a Moog modular synthesiser. The cathedral space was used for its reverb which lasted several seconds creating a large wet sound.

Ryuichi Sakamoto: Async

This album is fundamental to the tone of this project. Each track introduced new concepts such as synthesis, musique concrete, classical piano and orchestral arrangements. Im a particulaly fond of the tracks Andata, Solari, Zure, Stakra, and Garden which all use a fantastic synth tone. I want to try an emulate this tone in some way and use some of the musical ideas. The track Andata takes a Bach chorale style piece and reimagines it in a new context, I think something like this could fit into my idea in some way.
